Lessons Learned: In The Event You Smell Gas

Last month, as residents of 870 may recall, we experienced a gas leak one evening which resulted in a building evacuation. Fortunately, the gas leak was minor and was only due to a gas stove top which was not properly in the “off” position. From this experience, however, the Board realized that our building evacuation procedures had not been previously communicated and so wanted to share the following guidelines with residents in the event of a gas leak in the future:

* First, call 911 or Fire Department
* Second, call our super Sam Rosario
* If an evacuation is suggested by the Fire Department and/or ConEd, pull the fire alarm
* When evacuating, get some distance from the building by either crossing 181 or Haven

In the event of a building evacuation, it is the Board’s strong preference that this be coordinated/conducted by the Fire Department who are most qualified to do this safely and efficiently, esp. in the event of needing to evacuate residents who require help with stairs.
